Axis Development
It is clear that different parts of the nervous system produce regional specializations, for example the brain and the spinal cord are morphologically distinct. But how do these areas arise in early brain development? Again the use of animal models provides useful examples as many of the mechanism involved in regional specialization are at least partly conserved in humans.
In this section, we will discuss the formation of the two major axis in development. The formation of these often parallels the mechanisms of axis formation in the body as a whole:
- Anterior/ Posterior (A/ P)
- Dorsal/ Ventral (D/ V)
